SUITMA13

The REUSES project was presented at the 13th International SUITMA Conference (Soils of Urban, Industrial, Traffic, Mining and Military Areas), a major scientific event dedicated to the study and management of soils in anthropized environments. The conference, which brings together international experts in urban soil science and sustainable land management, offered a significant opportunity to share research results and perspectives on soil sealing and ecological restoration strategies.

During the event, the research team presented a contribution entitled “Surface sealing characteristics shape soil properties in urban and peri-urban areas: case evidence from the REUSES project”, illustrating how the characteristics of sealing materials influence the pedological properties (morphological, physical, chemical, and mineralogical) of urban and peri-urban soils.

Through case studies conducted in the Municipality of Ancona, the work highlighted significant differences in pedogenetic processes related to the type and homogeneity of surface sealing materials, emphasizing the importance of assessing spatial variability in urban soils to develop targeted and effective de-sealing strategies.

Participation in SUITMA13 enabled the REUSES project results to be framed within the broader international debate on urban soil regeneration, restoration of ecosystem services, and the transition toward circular economy modelsapplied to sustainable city planning.
